Obtaining prominence judgments from naı̈ve listeners – Influence of rating scales, linguistic levels and normalisation

چکیده
In this paper we examine different approaches to obtain judgments of perceptual prominence. We discuss different prominence scales, the influence of the linguistic unit on which prominence is rated and the normalisation of prominence judgments. We propose the use of a multilevel scale for obtaining prominence judgments. It seems that naı̈ve listeners can rate word prominence better than syllable prominence, resulting in better correlations to acoustics. It is shown that normalisation should be applied to the obtained ratings.

متن کاملEvaluating Different Rating Scales for Obtaining Judgments of Syllable Prominence from Naïve Listeners
Streefkerk [6] defines prominence as the perceptually outstanding parts in spoken language. An optimal rating scale for syllable prominence has not been found yet. This paper evaluates a 4point, an 11-point, a 31-point, and a continuous scale for the rating of syllable prominence and gives support for scales using a higher number of levels. Priming effects found by Arnold, et al. [1], could onl...
متن کاملProminence perception in and out of context
The perception of prosodic prominence is known to be influenced by several distinct factors. In this study, we investigated the role of context, both global and local, in the prominence judgements of naı̈ve listeners. Monolingual English listeners marked where they heard prominence on pairs of twoword phrases (e.g. blue ball, green drum). Stimuli varied in whether or not the first phrase implied...
متن کاملPerception of pitch tails at potential turn boundaries in Swedish
In a number of languages, intonational patterns at prosodic boundaries are considered to be relevant for turn transition or turn hold. A perception experiment tested the influence of fundamental frequency (F0) peak height and rising final contours on Swedish listeners’ judgment about whether a speaker wanted to hold the turn. While F0 peak height, as has been previously shown, did influence lis...
